As fall unfolds, chlorophyll molecules are pulled from the leaves into the tree to provide nutrients for the tree to survive the coming winter. The type of tree and nutrients left behind determine the colors seen on the leaves as they progress toward brown, when all of the nutrients have been pulled into the tree.
