Independent/Scott Kingsley

Dr. Melissa Girard (left) works to find a vein to give Sophie, a Pomeranian, a steroid injection while veterinary assistant Vicki Schreiner (right) holds the dog, and owner Vicki Board looks on. Girard knew by her senior year at UNL that her interest leaned toward veterinary medicine. ÒThe thing I fell in love with was the animal/human bond. I appreciate how an animal feels toward people and how people feel toward animals,Ó Girard said.
